About the Man’s Bunad from Hallingdal (Buskerud county)

This bunad was based on the man’s costume first worn in
Hallingdal in the 19th century. According to the watercolour
paintings by Johannes Flintoe (1822), the bunad was already
embroidered at that time, with a white jacket. Like other bunads
from Hallingdal, this costume reflects a compromise between the
influence of fashions from the outside world and what was possible
locally in terms of materials, finances and the prevailing tastes. The
men’s costumes were often more clearly influenced by external
fashions than were the women’s. There were two reasons for this:
men travelled more, and they did their military service in other parts
of the country.
