Oslo costume

This two beautiful sisters are Inger and Tove from Oslo . The
picture is very faded, but you can se the details and color on the little
picture to the right. The motive on the reticule is St.
Hallvard This bunad is rather a "drakt"
(costume) than a bunad. It was Steen & Strøm as, the biggest department
store in Norway, that decided to make a costume for their 150 years anniversary.
It was also a wish to make Oslo a costume since the city was to celebrate 900
years anniversary in 1950. All the flowers on the
bunad you can find in and around Oslo in the midsummer. Harriet Henriksen and
Ingeborg Solum composed the costume.
Click
on the picture to see Lea in her brand new Oslo drakt. She got it for her
confirmation in 2001, and the picture was taken on her big day. |
The
legend of St. Hallvard
St. Hallvard is Guardian Angel of
Oslo. The legend tells that Hallvard (1020 - 1043) was the son of Vebjørn on
Huseby in Lier, sisters son of Hellig Olavs mother.
He
was killed by an arrow when he tried to save a hunted pregnant woman in a boat
over the Drammensfjord. A big stone was tied to his body, and he was thrown in
the fjord. The body came up with the stone, and was found by people from his
village. This was taken as a sign that Hallvard was a saint. He was buried in
the church that later got his name, St. Hallvards' church. |
