About the Skjælingsbunad

This woman’s bunad is a copy of the Skjælingbunad from Øvre Numedal as it looked during the 1840s. The name ‘skjæling’ comes from the old Norwegian word for the starched facings that form undulating shapes at the bottom of the bodice and jacket. The Skjælingbunad ceased to be used as an ordinary festive folk costume around 1900, but there are still some old costumes that have been preserved and a few that have also been used as bunads during this century. Every shade of mauve, together with green and gold, are the colours that have always recurred on these  old folk costumes. The skirts were always edged with black, brown and patterned velvet bands, but these are no longer available. These borders have now been replaced by a specially woven silk  band.
