More about the Vest Agder bunad
In the beginning of 1900s a group of five persons from the Mandal area started
to collect old costumes material. They also talked with older people, who could
remember the old costumes. Todays womans bunad is made on the old traditions
from 1830-1870. It has been lots of variations on silver and fabrics, but the
desigh in the costums has been the same all the time.
The Shirred Skirt was for ordinary formal wear while the Pleated Skirt was always considered the finest and was worn for weddings and other important occasions. All the skirts have underskirts, and traditionally these had to be so beautifully made that they could be worn on their own and seen by anyone. The shawl is available in several versions, square or triangular with woollen yarn
embroidery. The square shawl is folded double and has brightly-coloured embroidery on one side and more subdued embroidered colours on the other side, which is turned outwards at times of bereavement. The headwear consists of a white linen headscarf worn draped over a padded leather support, left loose
for married women and rolled flat for unmarried women. There is symbolic meaning in the way the ends of the headscarf are
tied: they are normally tied to hang towards the front, but they hang down the back at times of bereavement. The padded leather support can also be worn without a headscarf, and just with a silk or woollen scarf tied round the head so it remains visible.
